Je Suis Ici!
I'm here! I still have to keep pinching myself that I did it. I saved for a year, found myself an apartment, learned French (well, attempted), got a leave of absence from my job and I am now in Paris for the next 9 weeks. And Paris welcomed me with the most beautiful weather yesterday. It was in the 80's, not a cloud in the sky. This day is promising to be just as amazing.
The funny thing is, I almost didn't make it. Harris and I left his place at 3:45 to catch my 6pm flight-seems like enough time, right? Well, they closed the entrance to the FDR at 96 St and we ended up lost in Spanish Harlem for almost a half hour. I called Aer Lingus in a panic and they said that the flight would "close" at 5pm. Well, we got to the airport at 5:07 and the gods must have been with me because they hadn't closed it yet. Talk about adreneline. The flight was fine (except for the 85 screaming babies-is it just me or does there seem to be a lot more of them than before-ugh) and then the flight from Dublin to Paris ended up only being about an hour. And when I saw the Eiffel Tower out of my window as we made our decent, I have to tell you, I almost cried. I don't think it was real until that moment.
My apartment is adorable. Had a little trouble figuring out how to get in the building but the guy that met me here to give me the keys was great. He was Italian and didn't speak the greatest French (and no English) so it was quite the comedy of errors, the two of us trying to talk to each other. And it took me a little while to figure out the internet but I am now unpacked and after sleeping for 6 hours yesterday and 10 last night, I am ready to go!
I explored my neighborhood yesterday (and dropped in on Notre Dame since it's just at the end of my street) and bought the obligatory baguette, stinky cheese and bottle of wine to have for dinner. The Latin quarter is just fantastic, as many of you know. And the streets are just as packed as Soho in NYC in the summer. I swear I heard just as much English as French on my walk. Ha ha. Guess I can't really complain about the tourists since I am one. But everyone that I spoke my awful French to yesterday spoke back to me in French and was very nice. So I'm off to a great start and am so excited to begin this adventure. I think I'm going to head up to Montmarte today since Beth and I never made it up there when we were here last time. I hope you are all doing well and please keep in touch.
Au Revoir!
